WHAT REALITY TV TAUGHT US ABOUT RUNNING A BUSINESS

TL;DR: From bad edits to brand deals, reality TV is full of small biz lessons — if you’re paying attention. Here's what we’ve learned from watching with our entrepreneur brains on.

We watch reality TV for the drama, sure.

But also? We’re taking notes.

Because whether it’s a chef crying over risotto, a housewife launching her fifth candle line, or a dating show contestant lowkey marketing a podcast, the same themes keep popping up:

branding, storytelling, clarity, confidence, and being unshakeably yourself.

Here’s what reality TV has (accidentally) taught us about building a business:

1. EDIT YOURSELF — OR SOMEONE ELSE WILL

In business (and on TV), perception is reality. If you’re not intentional about your messaging, your brand voice, your content — someone else will decide what your brand is. Control the narrative. Show up with clarity. Don’t leave it to the edit.

2. A STRONG POINT OF VIEW WINS EVERY TIME

The most memorable contestants aren’t the ones who try to please everyone. They’re the ones who know exactly who they are — and say it with their chest. Same with small business. Niche down. Own your weird. That’s how people find (and remember) you.

3. STRATEGY BEATS SPONTANEITY (MOST OF THE TIME)

Yes, some people get lucky. But the ones who stay booked on TV? They came in with a plan. Business is the same. You can wing it once or twice — but long-term growth comes from knowing your audience, showing up on purpose, and thinking three steps ahead.

4. NOT EVERYONE NEEDS TO LIKE YOU

Haters gonna hate. (Especially in the comments.) Not every client is your client. Not every collab is your collab. Stay focused.

The goal is not to be universally liked — the goal is to be trusted by the people you’re here to serve.

So yes — we love reality TV.

But we also love what it’s taught us:

Be clear. Be bold. Be ready to tell your story.

And maybe… get that trademark filed before episode three.
